CA Action Alert: Call Committee Members to Stop AB 1568

As reported yesterday, the Assembly’s Public Safety Committee will consider AB 1568 next week on Tuesday, March 3.

If that bill is enacted into law, it will block many registrants from petitioning for removal from the registry.

Please call the nine members of that committee today or any day prior to the hearing to let them know that you oppose AB 1568 and want them to vote “no” during the hearing.

Each call will take one minute or less and is very important because without opposition, the bill is likely to be approved by the Public Safety Committee.

See ACSOL’s letter below for ideas on what to say.

Below is a list of committee members as well as their phone.

Nick Schultz (Chair) (916) 319-2044

Juan Alanis (Vice Chair)  (916) 319-2022

Mark González  (916) 319-2054

Matt Haney (916) 319-2017

John Harabedian (916) 319-2041

Tom Lackey (916) 319-2034

Stephanie Nguyen (916) 319-2010

James C. Ramos (916) 319-2045

Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins (916) 319-2079

I just made the calls to the assembly members – very easy and simple to do.

I simply said “I’m from [zip code] and I am in opposition to AB 1568.”

Easily takes less than 1 minute for each call. Do not feel embarrassed or tentative about calling – the receptionist has no idea what each bill is based on ID number so do not feel like you’ll be judged or anything.

Please make your calls as this is important and takes very little effort to do.

I just called all nine offices and it took about 10 minutes. Only one office asked why I wanted the Assembly member to vote no. The reason I gave is the bill would decrease public safety. They didn’t want to know why or how. You can, of course, give a different reason.

OMG MORE Important than the Healthcare bill Fed

Oppose AB 1568 – I called and got a fax number which at the time of this posting did not work (916-319-2144) they are notifing their IT help desk for a fix. I also got an email address so I can send a letter for all members to read. Here is the email I received for the admin to the vice chair. [email protected] make sure you ask in the letter that it is to be shared with all commitee members.

you can also submit your position electronically

Just made all the calls. Took all of 12 minutes!
some are friendly and some are blasé.
three asked why I was opposed. I told them that the ability to petition to get off the registry was a very hard one piece of legislation that took place over many years. This Bill wants to gut that hard one legislation.

Hi everyone. I went ahead and did my part in calling all the committee members. The process was pretty easy. I did however have representatives from both Juan Alanis and Matt Haney’s desk request my full name and phone number for their records which I respectively declined to do. I highly encourage everyone to please call these member’s and express your upmost displeasure towards bill AB 1568. Thank you Janice for bringing this to our attention.

Made my phone calls – a first for me as I’ve typically used email. It was quick and easy, especially once I got over myself and my being nervous about it. The people answering their phone are just doing their job and part of their job is to take our opinions so went very well please I encourage everyone who reads these comments if you haven’t made the phone calls to please

Please call each Assembly Public Safety committee Member’S office soon, as requested by Janice. It took only ~10 minutes for all calls. Staff members took notes and will pass them on to their member. The essence of what I said: please vote against AB1568 at the Committee Hearing as the law it seeks to amend has only been in effect ~2 years, it is working well, there is no indication this amendment (AB1568) is needed nor will it improve the process. I kept conversation very pleasant. No questions from anyone. Each one agreed to pass my position along to their member. EASY! Please take a few minutes and make your calls! THANK YOU!

So they consider opinions from other states?

I sent them emails and made phone calls from Maryland to oppose this bill.

Made all the calls. The website is down for whatever reason…

Also submitted letter online at https://calegislation.lc.ca.gov/Advocates/faces/index.xhtml

Also emailed to [email protected]

More BS legislation that makes it look like they do something when this does nothing to improve public safety, increases cost to taxpayers and limits the Constitutional freedoms of law-abiding residents of this state.

Make the calls, it’s very easy to do!

Don’t be complacent with this!

I just finished calling everyone on the list. Took me less than 15 minutes. I truly believe that making this effort really will help make a difference and kill this bill in its tracks.

Made all the calls. Nobody asked the reason for my opposition, but I was prepared…

I made the calls including one to my assemblyperson who is a member of this committee and a person who received my support in the last election (I made sure that they were aware of it). I did find one thing interesting. During the call to Alanis’ office, I was very firmly told that he would not consider voting “no” due to being the author of the vote. I guess understandable but I am uncertain if the lady was upset with these “no” phone calls or was just directed to be obstinate. NOTE: Juan Alanis is Vice Chair of the committee, representative for Stanislaus County, and a former sergeant in the Sheriff’s department.

Please make the calls if you have not done so, there is no excuse not to.

Made my calls yesterday. Same as Janice, only one asked why I opposed. It was easy. I so wanted to be there today but work obligations kept me home. Can’t believe this bill would hold back anyone much less someone convicted in another state. What could that possibly matter? Guess their just trying to hook as many as they can. Wondering if anyone knows how things went this morning?
